Right to Life Statistics:

Of the 1.4 million abortions every year in the USA,
55% of the women are under 25 years of age. [National Abortion Federation]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
National Right to Life / stats
There have been more than 40 million abortions in the twenty six years since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized unrestricted abortion on January 22, 1973.
"In the days before Roe, radial feminist groups rallied around the sordid stories of bungled illegal abortions. They convinced the Supreme Court that legal abortions meant safe abortions."
"In the 1973 decision (Roe v. Wade) legalizing abortions, the Court wrongly stated that there was no consensus as to when human life begins."
"The ruling invalidated abortion laws in all fifty states, even though it seems clear in 1973 the majority of Americans were against abortion .... They as an elite, thus forced their will on the majority, even though their ruling was arbitrary both legally and medically."
Dr. Bernard Nathanson, cofounder of NARAL (National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, now pro-life, told how abortion advocates would conjure up sham statistics of abortion deaths to push their case. "... we generally emphasized the drama of the individual case -- not the mass statistics. But when we spoke of the latter, it was always 5,000 to 10,000 a year." He said that about 500 abortion deaths a year would have been more accurate.
The Court's decision allowed virtual elective abortion "because of the sweeping way in which 'health' is used by pro-abortionists to cover every possible problem of mind and situation."
Abortion was the cornerstone of the sexual and feminist revolution of the 1960s. It allowed them sever the connection between sexual relationships and children. It justified free sex, free love, and enabled feminists to achieve their goal of total equality with men.
Currently, 3,900 babies die from abortion every day in America - one every 22 seconds. Each year, over 1.4 million infants die from abortion.
More than 40 million babies have been slaughtered in America since the Supreme Court's ruling: more than the total loss of life in every American military conflict from the War of Independence through Desert Storm, more than the equivalent of the combined 1990 census populations of:
Atlanta, Boston, Chicago,
Dallas, Denver, Detroit,
Houston, Los Angeles, Miami,
Minneapolis/St. Paul, New Orleans, New York,
Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco,
Seattle, St. Louis, and Washington, DC
Tragically, many of these babies could have been saved, as there are an estimated 2, 000, 000 infertile couples who have pursued an interest in adoption. The Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc. stated in the New York Times, "If women are forced to carry unwanted pregnancies, the result is unwanted children. Everyone knows that they are among society's most tragic cases, often uncared-for, unloved, brutalized and abandoned." Adoption resources make the "unwanted child" unwanted for only nine months. "Adopted children fare far better than those children born out of wedlock who are left in single-parent homes or foster care." -- Child Psychologist Patrick Fagan. "Moreover adopted children score higher on tests; are less depressed; are healthier and have fewer behavioral problems."
Abortion: The Case for Life
How can I clearly and briefly convince my friends that abortion is wrong and that they should be pro-life?
You should tell your friends about three simple truths that anyone can grasp and when put together form the basis of the pro-life viewpoint:
1. Treat all human beings with justice and equality
The great injustices of history such as slavery, the Nazi holocaust, and the subjugation of women all demonstrate that the only safeguard against oppres- sion is a policy of treating all
human beings equally. But in order to treat humans as equals, we must first identify what it is that makes us equal with one another when we often differ with one another so much. Superficial traits like race, religion, gender, nationality, age, size, or level of function are unequal in human beings and are therefore poor gauges of our equality. Instead, we should observe that all human beings have a human nature and that by being a member of
our species every human being shares in that nature. Included in that nature is the right to not be deprived of life, liberty, or property without just cause (i.e. due process).
2. An unborn child is a human being
It is an indisputable biological fact that an unborn child is a human being from the moment of conception. We know this because a human being is simply any organism that is a member of our species and the unborn fit this definition because they are:
Alive - The unborn grow, take in nutrients, and respond to the outside world. Later in pregnancythey can even hear and recognize their mother's voice!
Human - With a full set of human DNA and two human parents the unborn are obviously just as human as the rest of us.
And Complete - Unlike sperm and eggs, which are alive and human, the unborn are complete. Sperm and eggs are just parts of the human body that need each other to become a human being. The unborn child however, is a whole human body that only needs time and nutrition to continue developing into a fully- grown human being.
3. Abortion does not treat the unborn as equals and should be prohibited.
What should I tell my friends who say we need abortion to control overpopulation, to reduce child abuse, to help women who are too poor to take care of their children, and for victims of rape?
Since we already showed that the unborn are human beings ask yourself this, "Would we justify killing a born human being, like a toddler or disabled person, because their parents couldn't afford to take care of them, they had a poor quality of life, or they reminded us of a painful experience in our lives? Should we kill homeless people to reduce both poverty and the number of the unwanted homeless in the world?" If we wouldn't tolerate this for born humans, then we shouldn't tolerate these reasons being used to kill unborn humans. Allowing this bias in favor of born people would make us guilty of not treating all human beings equally, which everyone can agree is wrong.
But my friends say it's just a fetus, that it isn't a human being.
The word fetus comes from a Latin word meaning young one or offspring. In the
past it meant "baby," but now it seems to mean "sub-human." Terms like fetus or embryo are simply stages in the development of a human being, just like infant, toddler and adolescent. While the stages of development differ, a human being is present from conception till death. (Source for "fetus" definition:http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fetus)
What about the right to choose? Don't women have the right to control what
happens to their bodies?
On February 1, 1960 in Greensboro North Carolina, four African American
college students sat down at asegregated lunch counter for service but they were refused by the white owners. Immediately, more students joined these types of sit-ins which soon became a hallmark of the African American civil rights movement. Southern newspaper
editorials at the time admitted that while the students had a right to be there, there presence also conflicted with the lunch counter owner's right to choose whom they served in their restaurant.
We now understand that no one has the right to choose to unjustly discriminate
against another human being. Women have a right to control their bodies, as long as they don't harm the little body within them when they are pregnant. To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln when he de= bated Stephen Douglas over the ethics of slavery, "No one has the right to do wrong." Just as a slave is not property to be sold, an unborn child is not tissue that can be destroyed. In some states now, when a pregnant woman is murdered, the perpetratorfaces two felony murder indictments, recognizing as well, the unborn as a human being. They areboth human beings and should be treated as such, which is the core belief of the pro-life movement.
